Intercultural Communication

« back to classes page
ClassGraphic When you are communicating with people across cultures, you will discover that they have different patterns of communication than you do. Miscommunication not only hinders your goals when you work across cultures, but it can also lead to embarrassing blunders. When should you avoid humor? How much eye contact should you use? This course describes culturally patterned differences related to directness, risk-taking, hierarchy, individualism, and competitiveness. The differences in non-verbal communication are also covered, such as the meaning conveyed by symbols and gestures, the use of personal space, and the use of facial expressions. This course also describes how various cultures use communication to “save face” or to manage their public identity.  Other topics include cultural “logics,” the model of cultural intelligence, and responses to culture shock.
